A recording studio is a specialized facility for the recording and mixing of instrumental or vocal musical performances. It can range in size from a small in-home project studio large enough to record a singer-songwriter, to a building with space for a full orchestra and chorus. Often both the recording and monitoring (listening) spaces are specially designed by an acoustician to achieve optimum acoustic properties.
The most important element of a professional studio is the people who work in it. A good producer can be worth their weight in gold to a musician, giving invaluable input on how best to improve the song and give it that extra something. They can also act as a mentor, helping to develop the musician as a person and artist.
An ideal studio will have dedicated rooms for instruments and vocals, to reduce the chance of echoes and over-amplification, which can spoil a take. There will usually be a drum room, vocal booth, and perhaps a string room or even a horn room in larger facilities. High quality listening headphones, music stands, and electric tethers for co-recording or listening will all be found in the control room, alongside the audio interfaces which connect the recording equipment to the computer for editing and manipulation via digital audio workstations.
Finally, a good studio will be able to offer competitive rates for their services. Word of mouth is an essential tool in the industry, so musicians will often look to other local bands or artists who have used a particular studio for advice on who to go to.
