A recording studio is a specialized facility for the audio production of instrumental or vocal musical performances and other sounds. It can range from a small in-home project studio large enough to record a singer-guitarist to a huge building housing a full orchestra. Generally, a recording studio consists of both a live room (where instruments and vocals are recorded) and a control room where sound engineers operate professional audio for analogue or digital recording to route and manipulate the sounds from the live and vocal rooms.
The first thing an aspiring music producer will need to purchase is a computer with plenty of RAM, as music software can be memory intensive. Initially, any laptop or desktop computer will do, but as an audio producer grows his or her collection of equipment, it is recommended to invest in the best machine that can be afforded.
Next up on the list of necessary equipment is an audio interface. This device takes in the analog output signals from the microphones and other input devices and converts them into digital data that can be stored on your computer or transferred to a tape recorder. Some audio interfaces have MIDI connections as well and can be used to control synthesizers, keyboards and other electronic instruments.
A good selection of musical instruments will also be needed. While most studios only allow bands and musicians to bring their own equipment, major recording studios typically have a variety of instruments on hand. This allows musicians to play around with different instrument combinations and to experiment with different sound effects and melodies.
