A recording studio is a specialized facility equipped with audio and sound equipment that is used to record music, vocals or spoken words. They are usually soundproofed to minimize external noise interference. They consist of separate rooms for recording, mixing, and control. Professionals such as musicians, voice-over artists and sound engineers use them.
The typical recording studio has a “studio” or “live room” where instrumentalists and singers perform; a “control room” where audio engineers, often with record producers, operate professional audio mixing consoles and effects units to mix, manipulate (e.g., by adjusting the equalization and adding effects) and route the sound for analog or digital recording; and a “machine room” to house louder, more invasive electronic equipment such as power amplifiers. Recording studios may also have smaller rooms called isolation booths to isolate instruments from microphones, to prevent their sounds from interfering with the recordings or distracting listeners.
In some of the earliest studios, curtains and frosted or smoked glass were used to hide technicians’ work. This not only reinforced the musician-centric hierarchy of studio work but, more importantly, obscured the actual tasks being performed by technicians.
Historically, multi-track tape was the dominant format for studio recordings. Once a song was mixed and edited, it would be sent to a machine that printed the track(s) onto a 1/2-inch two-track stereo tape, or master recording. At this point, it was common for treatment signals such as echo or reverb to be added to the final product.
