A recording studio is a place in which sound recordings are made. Ideally, the space is specially designed by an acoustician to achieve optimum acoustic properties. Recording studios are used to record musicians and vocal performers for musical and voice-over recordings, and also to create sound effects for television and film, such as background music and dialogue replacement.
Most professional recording studios will have a variety of instruments on hand. In addition to the usual collection of standard rock instruments such as guitars, piano, and drum sets, most will also have a selection of other instrumental offerings like strings, woodwinds, and percussion. The main studio will contain a wide selection of microphones and other recording equipment, including a mixing console. The control room will include computer systems with digital audio workstations for recording input, equalization, and mastering of the final product. Music stands, high-quality listening headphones, electronic tethers for co-recording and listening, and chairs and stools will be available for the use of recording artists.
Some recording studios may also have additional rooms, such as a separate drum room and one or more small sound-isolated rooms that are used mostly for vocal recordings. These additional spaces are intended to allow the musicians, singers, and audio engineers to hear each other and also to receive cue gestures and conducting from a band leader. The drum room, vocal booths, and the control room typically have windows to allow for light and visibility.
