If you are a musician with plans for a music career, at some point, you will need to record in a professional studio. Depending on your ambitions and the audience you intend to reach, it may even be necessary for every song.
There are different types of recording studios, from the bedroom studio (typically a small setup next to your bed) to the semi-pro home studio and the professional production suite. All have the same goal of creating industry-standard music/recordings but differ in terms of size and equipment.
Traditionally, a recording studio was thought of as a soundproofed complex with a live room for musicians to perform in and a vocal booth as well as a control room for recording, editing and mixing the sounds from these rooms. This view reached its heyday in the 1960s as the stereo revolution took hold and AM radio started losing audience share to FM.
Today, recording studios can be smaller than this and still produce high-quality results. This is because digital audio recording has taken over and most people are now using PC based multitrack digital audio workstations (DAW) for their recording needs. These programs are much easier to use than the older analog equipment and most of the functionality that was once in dedicated hardware units like compressors and EQ’s can now be found built-in to the DAW program or as plugin software.
One of the most important considerations for getting started with recording is finding a good producer or engineer. They have logged thousands of hours recording in different genres and styles and can give you the insight you need to take your music to the next level.
