A recording studio is a specialized facility for recording instrumental or vocal musical performances, spoken words and other sounds. They range in size from a small in-home project studio large enough to record a single singer-guitarist, to a large building with space for a full orchestra. Ideally, both the recording and monitoring (listening and mixing) spaces are specially designed by an acoustician or audio engineer to achieve optimum acoustic properties.
A typical studio set-up will include a main room for musicians to play and a smaller room called a vocal booth for single musicians or voice-over artists to be acoustically isolated for very clean takes. Other rooms may include an isolation booth for loud drums or electric guitar amplifiers and speakers; a machine room where noisier equipment like racks of fan-cooled computers and power amps are kept to prevent them from interfering with the recordings; and one or more control rooms.
Many studios will have a variety of standard rock instruments like piano, drum sets and electronic keyboards as well as electric and acoustic guitars and basses. They will also have a selection of top quality in-house instruments to ensure that the performers can get a great sound from their instrument of choice. Music stands, high-quality listening headphones, electronic tethers for co-recording and mixing, and comfortable chairs and stools are usually provided in the main room. The machine room will contain several computer systems with digital audio workstations available for recording input and equalization and mastering.
