When you listen to music in your MP3 player, car radio or at a live performance, you might not think about all the time and effort that went into the production. What you hear is the result of many musicians, songwriters and sound technicians working together in the recording studio to create a unique musical arrangement. Recording studios are specialized spaces designed by an acoustician for optimum acoustic properties (sound diffusion, low level of reflected sound echoes, etc).
A modern recording studio can be as small as a home project studio or as large as a full building with multiple rooms. In either case, it should be soundproofed on all sides to prevent sounds from the outside world from being picked up by microphones. Most studios have a control room where the audio signals are recorded and mixed. A sizeable portion of both commercial and home studios run PC-based multitrack audio software. This allows for a much larger number of tracks than was previously possible using analog tape machines. Analog tape is still used by some purists as it is considered to have a warmer sound than digitally recorded music.
When selecting a studio to work in, consider their reputation and experience recording your type of musical style. You can also ask for references from other musicians who have worked with the studio. Make sure the studio is equipped with equipment that suits your needs and has the capacity to accommodate a large number of musicians. If you’re planning to play electric instruments, bring amplifiers and effects pedals that are compatible with the studio’s equipment.
